 Oak Grove Theatre's Scottish Quest

The Oak Grove Drama Department under the direction of Suzanne Allmon, has been selected to perform in the world's largest and most prestigious arts festival in the world as part of the American High School Theatre Festival (AHSTF). Each August, Edinburgh, Scotland becomes the most magical and exciting place on the earth as performing artists from all over the world come to Scotland to take part in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The whole city becomes a stage and visitors can view performances everywhere from playgrounds, to conference rooms, to city parks, to churches. The Fringe Festival includes over 18,000 different performances of music, theatre, dance, and comedy during its three week run. Oak Grove High School's performance will be showcased at the AHSTF venue in Edinburgh.

Oak Grove High School, long recognized for its entertaining and innovative productions, was selected by the AHSTF Board of Advisors to represent the State of Mississippi and the United States as part of the year 2009 AHSTF program. The Board reviews all completed applications and identifies the top high schools in the nation based on their most recent bodies of work, awards, community involvement, philosophies and recommendations. The AHSTF Board of Advisors is made up of an elite group of professionals from various universities, such as Harvard, Pacific Conservatory for the Performing Arts, and the Boston Conservatory. Out of 16, 000 schools nominated around the United States, Oak Grove was one of thirty- five schools that were chosen for this honor.

This will be Oak Grove's third time to receive the honor. They also received it in 1999 and 2004. Carol Ann Hertenstein, who was part of that honor in 1999 said, "Scotland was one of the greatest experiences of my life. It was the best trip ever and well worth the work!" As you can imagine, Oak Grove High School Drama students, parents, and Mrs. Allmon are heavily involved in fundrasing activities to finance their two-week adventure to Scotland and England. Contributions and donations are welcome and more information is available from Suzanne Allmon, Oak Grove High School Drama Director at (601) 264-7232 or ogdrama@hotmail.com
